The distribution of the rations is weekly and are intended for ten local families.
Since last 1st of March, the solidary food storage container, initiative promoted by the NGO Aunar Elkartea is underway in Zamudio. The project, in which the Consistory and the European Waste4Think initiative that seeks a better management of waste collaborates, ` will allow to collect surplus from collective and profesional kitchens of the local area to distribute them among a dozen families in the locality´ they pointed out from the City Hall.
Thus, food deliveries will be weekly, and this will be delivered frozen and packed in a non-returnable pack, suitable for freezing and microwaves. The initiative has the financial support of the Consistory that has provided 5,809 € for its development. In addition, the Vizcaya School participates in the donation of surpluses to be allocated to the “population that demands food aid and thereby contribute to reducing inequality in the municipality,” they stressed.
Together with the social purpose, the solidari food storage seeks the reduction of waste. In this way, the surplus of food will be subjected to a rigorous sanitary control. Also, the food will be frozen in containers with all the guarantees and will be delivered to the beneficiaries in isothermal bags in which there will be enough food for a week. These bags will be delivered at the beginning of the initiative, and the beneficiaries must carry them at the time of collection to ensure the maintenance of the cold chain.
The project also seeks to sensitize the citizens of Zamudio against the food waste, and projects “a practical discourse” from a “social as well as environmental” perspective, they emphasized.
